Before opening the laptop we check the cheap causes: the function-key touchpad toggle, the Windows touchpad switch, the vendor utility (Synaptics, ELAN or the laptop maker's own app) and the BIOS setting. If a swollen battery is lifting the trackpad we deal with the battery first, because pressing or flexing the case around a swollen cell is unsafe. Many trackpad modules connect with a thin flex cable that can be reseated or replaced without changing the whole top case.

Common questions about Laptop Trackpad Repair
Why is my laptop trackpad not working?
The usual causes are a touchpad switched off by a function key or the BIOS, a Windows driver that broke after an update, a setting that disables the trackpad when a mouse is plugged in, a loose or damaged flex cable, a failed module, or a swollen battery pushing against it from underneath.
How do I check whether the trackpad is just turned off?
Press the touchpad function key (often an F-key with a trackpad icon), then open Settings, Bluetooth & devices, Touchpad and make sure the switch is on. On many laptops the trackpad also moves the pointer in the BIOS setup screen; if it does, the hardware is usually fine and the fault is in Windows.
The trackpad is lifting or the case looks bulging. What should I do?
That is often a swollen battery pushing up from underneath. Stop charging and using the laptop, do not press on the bulge, and bring it in. A swollen battery is a fire risk, so the battery comes first; see our laptop battery replacement page.
Do you replace only the trackpad or the whole palm rest?
On many laptops the trackpad is a separate module that can be replaced on its own. On some models it is built into the palm rest or top case, and replacing that costs more. We confirm which applies to your model at diagnosis, before you approve anything.
How much does trackpad repair cost and how long does it take?
There is no fixed price: a setting fix, a cable reseat and a module replacement are very different jobs, so we quote after diagnosis. Diagnosis for a Windows laptop is RM100, waived when you approve the repair quote. Turnaround and part availability are confirmed at diagnosis.

Why did my trackpad stop working after a Windows update?
A Windows update can replace the touchpad driver with a generic one or reset the vendor utility's settings. Rolling the driver back, or reinstalling the one from your laptop maker's support page, often brings the trackpad back. If the trackpad also fails in the BIOS setup screen, the module or its cable is the likelier cause, and we can test that.
