One part number, A1466, covers Airs from 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2017: five machines with different internal builds and different parts. Common MacBook Air Issues
The MacBook Air's ultra-thin, fanless design creates failure modes the Pro does not have. Each card names the generations it applies to, so you can skip the ones that are not yours.
Liquid Damage (Thin Chassis Risk)
The slim profile means liquid reaches the logic board in seconds, and the Air has minimal shielding between the keyboard and the board. Coffee, water and soft drinks corrode within minutes. Power it off immediately, do not try to restart it, and bring it straight in for ultrasonic cleaning.
Charging Port Issues (USB-C / MagSafe)
Airs charge over USB-C, with MagSafe also on M2 through M5. A port that no longer charges may be the connector, the cable, the battery, or a board-level charging fault — four very different repairs, which is why this one is always diagnosed before it is quoted.
Accelerated Battery Degradation
The ultra-thin chassis leaves the battery little thermal headroom, so cycles accumulate faster than on a Pro. Apple rates these batteries at 1,000 cycles; reduced runtime, a service warning, or any swelling means replace it now. Swelling presses on the trackpad and the display.
Butterfly Keyboard Failure (2018-2019)
The 2018 and 2019 Airs use Apple's butterfly mechanism, where a single dust particle under a switch can kill a key. There is no per-key fix: the repair is a full top case replacement, the same as the MacBook Pro butterfly repair — and it includes a new battery.
Display Flex Cable Failure
A very thin display flex cable runs through the hinge. Opening and closing fatigues it, which shows up as intermittent lines, flicker, or backlight loss that changes when you move the lid. That last detail is the tell — mention it, because it points straight at the cable.
Fanless Design and Thermal Throttling
M-series Airs have no internal fan, so under sustained load the chip reduces performance to manage heat. That is the design, not a fault. If your Air runs hot during light use, diagnostics separate normal behaviour from a software, battery, or board fault.
Unlike the MacBook Pro, the Air cools passively through its aluminium body alone. Slowing down under sustained load is the design working, not a fault, and no repair changes it. But liquid damage, blocked vents or a displaced thermal pad make it worse than it should be — and heat during lightuse is not normal. We tell you which of the two you have, and we will say “nothing to fix here” when that is the answer.
