Common questions about Laptop Microphone Repair
Why is my laptop microphone not working?
The usual causes are a mute key or privacy switch, Windows microphone privacy settings blocking the app, the wrong input device selected, an audio driver or enhancement that broke after an update, a loose or damaged microphone cable, or a failed microphone. Liquid or a knock to the lid can also affect it.
How do I check whether the microphone is just muted or blocked?
Check for a microphone mute key, then open Settings, System, Sound, Input, pick the built-in microphone and watch the input level bar while you speak. Also open Settings, Privacy & security, Microphone and allow access for your app. If the bar moves in Windows but your call app hears nothing, the microphone is fine and the app setting is the fault.
Why does my microphone work with a headset but not on its own?
A headset microphone is a separate input from the built-in one. If the headset works and the laptop's own microphone does not, the built-in microphone, its cable or a driver or privacy setting for that input is at fault. Windows can also keep preferring the headset input after you unplug it.
Can you replace only the microphone?
On some models the microphone is a tiny part on its own cable. On others it sits on the camera board or the audio board. We confirm which applies to your model at diagnosis, before you approve anything.
How much does microphone repair cost and how long does it take?

My microphone stopped after a spill. Can it be repaired?

Why do people hear an echo of themselves on my calls?
Echo usually comes from the speakers feeding back into the microphone, a Listen to this device setting, or a conferencing app's audio enhancement, not from a failed microphone. Using headphones, turning that setting off or switching enhancements off often stops it. Static or hiss that stays in every app, even in a quiet room, is more likely a microphone or cable fault.
