On Apple Silicon (M1/M2/M3) and T2 Intel MacBooks, storage is soldered to the board — so a board replacement can mean losing everything. A board repair never touches your storage. That's the whole point.
What actually fails on a MacBook logic board
- No power / won't turn on — often a power-management IC, a shorted rail, or a damaged power line. Very commonly repairable at component level.
- Liquid / water damage — the #1 cause of board failure. The earlier you bring it in (and the longer it stays off), the more we can save. Don't try to charge or power a wet MacBook.
- No charging — frequently the charging IC or USB-C port circuitry, not the battery.
- No display / black screen but fans spin — backlight circuit or display power; the Mac is "alive" but the screen circuit failed.
- Boot loops / kernel panics / shutting down — can be board-level power instability rather than software.
- USB-C / Thunderbolt ports dead — port controller components on the board.
