The Most Common HP Laptop Problems (and Why They Happen)
1. HP Pavilion Hinge Cracking
This is the single most common HP issue we see. The HP Pavilion 15-series (particularly 2018–2021 models) has a design weakness in the plastic chassis at the hinge mounting point. The bottom case plastic cracks around one or both hinges, and the hinge itself then grinds directly against the cracked plastic with every open/close cycle.
Signs: Cracking or popping sound when opening the lid, visible crack lines in the dark plastic near the hinge, screen that wobbles or does not hold its angle.
Why it matters: Left unaddressed, the cracking propagates and eventually the hinge breaks through the chassis — at which point you may be looking at both hinge repair and screen cable replacement if the cable is damaged. Hinge repair caught early runs RM 160–200. Caught late with cable damage it can run RM 400–500.
Fix time: 1–2 hours. Same-day service.
2. HP Laptop Overheating and Thermal Throttling
HP consumer laptops — Pavilion and Envy series — use thin heatsink designs to keep weight down. These are effective when new but become inadequate once the factory thermal paste dries and dust accumulates in the fin stack.
Symptoms: fan running constantly even at idle, keyboard hot to the touch above the F1–F5 keys, Windows performance noticeably sluggish during longer sessions.
Fix: Deep clean plus thermal paste replacement. For HP Pavilion, RM 120–180. For Envy and OMEN, RM 160–280. Our laptop repair service covers all HP thermal work.
3. HP Battery Swelling
Swollen batteries are a significant safety issue. On HP laptops the early signs are a trackpad that feels raised or hard to click (the battery sits under the trackpad area on most HP models) or visible separation between the bottom panel and the chassis.
What to do: Stop charging immediately. Back up data. Bring it in — do not put it in a bag or leave it unattended.
Battery replacement at Techfix: RM 250–RM 500 depending on model.
4. HP Screen Flickering
Screen flickering on HP laptops can be caused by:
- A loose or damaged screen data cable (common on Pavilion models where the cable runs through a hinge with significant flex stress)
- A failing LCD panel itself
- A display driver conflict (software — try updating HP drivers and Intel/AMD display drivers first)
- Backlight inverter failure on older HP models
We diagnose screen flickering at no charge before quoting a repair.
5. HP Charging Problems
HP uses a proprietary charging port identifier system — the charger communicates with the laptop via a data pin, and if this pin is damaged in either the charger or the port, the laptop will charge at a reduced rate or not at all. Symptoms include the message "HP recommends using an HP-branded charger" on battery status.
Charging port replacement: RM 180–RM 350 depending on model and whether it is a barrel connector (older) or USB-C (newer).
HP Spectre: What Makes Premium HP Repairs Different
The HP Spectre x360 is an excellent laptop — OLED display option, premium aluminium chassis, high-end components. It also has some repair considerations:
Gem-cut design: The angular chassis of the Spectre x360 means panel gaps are tighter and disassembly requires more care than standard HP laptops.
OLED display option: If your Spectre has the OLED display option, screen replacement uses a more expensive OLED panel. We stock OEM-specification OLED replacements.
Convertible hinge: The 360-degree hinge is more complex than a standard two-axis hinge. Spectre hinges are generally more durable than Pavilion ones, but when they do fail they require specific replacement parts.
HP EliteBook: Business Reliability and Repairability
The EliteBook range is HP's business-grade line and is notably more repairable than consumer models. Similar to Lenovo ThinkPad, HP makes service manuals available for EliteBook models, components are more modular, and parts are available for longer.
Common EliteBook repairs:
- Battery replacement: EliteBook batteries are internal but accessible without the complexity of ultrabook disassembly
- Keyboard replacement: EliteBook keyboards are self-contained units that clip in — replacement is clean and straightforward
- Docking station port: The expansion connector on the bottom of EliteBook models can develop contact issues, particularly on heavily docked units
