The Most Common Dell Laptop Issues
1. Dell Inspiron Screen Damage
Inspiron screens are the most-replaced laptop screens we handle. The combination of a lightweight chassis that does not protect the display well and Malaysia's busy student/commuter laptop use creates many cracked screens. Inspiron screens are among the most affordable to replace — most 14" and 15" Inspiron screens are done within 1–2 hours.
One thing to watch: some Inspiron models use non-touch IPS panels and some use touch panels. Using the wrong replacement loses touch functionality permanently. We always confirm the exact panel variant before ordering.
2. Dell XPS Battery Swelling
The XPS 13 and XPS 15 have a known tendency for battery swelling, particularly on the 2019–2021 generation. The battery sits in a very confined space under the motherboard, and as it swells, it can push against the motherboard and cause logic board damage if left unaddressed.
Signs: bottom panel bulging upward, trackpad clicks becoming inconsistent, visible gap between bottom panel and chassis.
Battery replacement on XPS requires full disassembly — motherboard removal is often necessary to safely access the battery. This is why XPS battery replacement costs more than Inspiron. Do not delay this repair.
3. Dell Latitude Charging Port Failures
Latitude laptops, particularly the 5000 and 7000 series used in corporate environments, frequently develop issues with the USB-C charging port after heavy use with docking stations. The USB-C port carries significant mechanical stress from constant dock connect/disconnect cycles.
We repair USB-C ports via board-level soldering. If the port pads on the motherboard are damaged, port replacement costs RM 260–400. If it is the connector only, it is RM 200–280.
4. Dell XPS Screen Flickering
A specific issue on XPS 13 2-in-1 (7390 and 9310 models) is screen flickering related to the proximity sensor on the camera module. There is a firmware fix from Dell for some cases, but hardware cable loosening is also common on these hinge-intensive convertible models.
If your XPS 13 screen flickers, try the Dell BIOS update first (downloadable from Dell's support site). If the issue persists, it likely needs a cable or panel replacement — book a diagnostic and we will identify which.
5. Dell G-Series Thermal Throttling
The Dell G15 and G16 are popular gaming laptops in Malaysia for their price-to-performance. Like all gaming laptops, they throttle when the factory thermal paste dries out and dust accumulates.
A gaming laptop thermal overhaul on a Dell G15 costs RM 160–260 and typically drops CPU peak temps by 15–20°C. If your G15 is dropping frames or running above 95°C under sustained load, this is the repair you need.
