Huawei Parts Availability: The Post-2019 Reality

In May 2019, the US government placed Huawei on its Entity List, cutting off access to US technology including Google Mobile Services. This had a direct impact on Huawei phone parts and repair ecosystems.

What This Means for Repairs in 2026

Good news for older models (P30, P40, Mate 30, Mate 40, Nova 5T–7): Parts are now well-established in the aftermarket supply chain. Repairs for these models are straightforward with competitive pricing.

For newer models (P60, Mate 60, Nova 12): Parts are sourced from Huawei's domestic supply chain and China-based aftermarket suppliers. Availability is improving but may involve 2–7 day waiting periods for some components.

For Huawei foldables (P50 Pocket, Mate X series): Parts are scarce and expensive. Repair costs are high and turnaround times are longer.

Huawei mid-range repairs are comparably priced to Samsung A series. Huawei flagship repairs are typically lower cost than equivalent iPhone Pro repairs, though parts lead times can be longer.

Huawei Without Google Services: What Still Works

A common question from Huawei users in Malaysia: without Google Mobile Services, what actually works on newer Huawei phones (P40 and above)?

Works normally: Phone calls, SMS, WhatsApp, Telegram, TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, Shopee, Lazada, banking apps (most Malaysian banks support HarmonyOS/Huawei), Grab, camera, gallery, music, and all Huawei AppGallery apps.

Does not work natively: Google Maps (use HERE WeGo or Waze instead), Gmail app (use browser), Google Play Store (sideloading some APKs is possible but not supported), YouTube app (use browser).

The practical reality for Malaysian users: Most daily usage for the average Malaysian — social media, e-commerce, banking, food delivery, ride hailing — works fully on newer Huawei phones. The limitation is primarily for Google-specific apps and the Play Store ecosystem.

Huawei Repair: Should You Still Invest?

The question of whether to repair an older Huawei phone is legitimate given the ecosystem constraints. Our general guidance:

  • Huawei P30/P40/Mate 40 series and older: These ran Google services before the ban and can still run older versions of Google apps. Strong case for repair if the hardware is otherwise good.

  • Huawei P50/P60/Mate 50/60 series: Designed for HarmonyOS without Google. Repair is worthwhile if the phone meets your daily needs — most Malaysian users find it sufficient.

  • Huawei foldables: Given high repair costs for foldables (P50 Pocket screen from RM 2,200), carefully evaluate whether the usage justifies the expense. Contact us for an honest assessment.
