Learn how to check your iPhone battery cycle count in iOS 18. Find out when it's time for a replacement and what cycle count means for battery health.
How to Check iPhone Battery Cycle Count (2026 Guide)
Your iPhone battery doesn't last forever. Every time you charge it from 0% to 100%, that counts as one battery cycle. After enough cycles, your battery starts holding less charge — and your phone starts dying faster.
Here's everything you need to know about checking your iPhone's battery cycle count, what the numbers mean, and when it's time for a replacement.
What Is a Battery Cycle Count?
A battery cycle is one full charge from 0% to 100%. It doesn't have to happen all at once:
- Charging from 50% to 100% twice = 1 cycle
- Charging from 25% to 75% twice = 1 cycle
- Charging from 0% to 100% once = 1 cycle
Apple designs iPhone batteries to retain 80% of their original capacity at 500 complete charge cycles. After 500 cycles, your battery health will typically drop below 80%, and you'll start noticing significantly shorter battery life.
How to Check Battery Cycle Count on iPhone (iOS 16.1+)
Apple made this easy starting with iOS 16.1. Here's how:
Step 1: Open Settings
Tap the Settings app on your iPhone.
Step 2: Go to Battery
Scroll down and tap Battery.
Step 3: Tap Battery Health & Charging
Tap Battery Health & Charging (or just Battery Health on older iOS versions).
Step 4: Check Your Cycle Count
You'll see:
- Maximum Capacity — the percentage of original capacity remaining
- Cycle Count — how many full charge cycles your battery has completed (iOS 18+)
Note: On iOS versions before 18, the cycle count isn't shown directly in Settings. You'll need to go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Analytics & Improvements > Analytics Data and search for "BatteryCycleCount" in the log files.
What Do the Numbers Mean?
| Cycle Count | Battery Health | What You'll Notice |
|---|---|---|
| 0–200 | 95–100% | Like-new battery life |
| 200–400 | 85–95% | Slightly shorter battery life |
| 400–500 | 80–85% | Noticeable drain by evening |
| 500–700 | 70–80% | Frequent charging needed |
| 700+ | Below 70% | Battery dies quickly, possible shutdowns |
Apple considers a battery "consumed" when it drops below 80% maximum capacity. At this point, iOS may also display a "Service" warning in Battery Health settings.
When Should You Replace Your iPhone Battery?
Replace your battery when:
- Maximum capacity is below 80% — Apple's official threshold
- You're charging twice or more per day — a clear sign of degraded capacity
- Your phone shuts down unexpectedly — the battery can't deliver enough power
- Performance throttling is active — iOS slows your phone to prevent shutdowns (check Settings > Battery > Battery Health for "Peak Performance Capability")
- Battery is physically swelling — if your screen is lifting or the case is bulging, stop using the phone immediately
How Long Does an iPhone Battery Last?
Most iPhone users hit 500 cycles within 18–24 months of daily use. Heavy users (gaming, streaming, GPS navigation) may reach 500 cycles in 12–15 months.
| Usage Pattern | Time to 500 Cycles | Expected Battery Health |
|---|---|---|
| Light (calls, messages) | 2.5–3 years | 82–85% |
| Average (social media, browsing) | 18–24 months | 78–82% |
| Heavy (gaming, streaming) | 12–15 months | 75–80% |
Tips to Extend Your Battery Lifespan
- Avoid charging to 100% every time — keep between 20–80% when possible
- Use Optimized Battery Charging — enable in Settings > Battery > Battery Health
- Avoid extreme heat — don't leave your iPhone in a hot car or direct sunlight
- Use the original charger or MFi-certified cables — cheap chargers can damage battery cells
- Turn off unnecessary background app refresh — Settings > General > Background App Refresh
